Amethyst crystal with a smattering of silver ‘Little round bowl’ decorated with branches of cherry blossom by Julia Linstead, Glass
Decorated with boughs of cherry where the leaves have yet to fully spread allowing the blossom room to shine; this ‘Little round bowl’ was inspired by a beautiful old cherry tree near Julia’s studio. The purple leaved cherry has deep pink blooms, it flowers when the bluebells and last of the daffodils are out, creating an intense pop of colour above the subtle blues and yellows. “I love the promise of spring, each flower has its moment, snowdrops leading to celandines, crocus, daffodils and bluebells. As though they have decided to let each other take centre stage for a few weeks.” This cherry tree heralds the end of spring, and the intense colour promises of the hot, vibrancy of summer flowers.
One-off pieces are where Julia gets to play with the glass, adding more layers of colour during the blowing process and decorating the glass with very intricate designs which she wouldn’t want to repeat.
Julia’s ‘Little round bowls’ evolved from a desire to make pieces people are happy to hold and explore. They have a satisfying weight and are comfortable to hold in your hands. The shape of these pieces allows Julia to hide pattern behind the swathes of colour or under the curve of the glass. So, the only way to really appreciate all the design is to hold the piece in your hands, turning it into or away from the light and exploring the layers of pattern, colour, reflection and refraction.
An original design by Julia Linstead, Glass.
Hand blown lead crystal.
The pattern is hand drawn and sandblasted into the surface of the glass.
