Cobalt and gold vase form decorated with ammonites in seaweed with a shoal of little fish by Julia Linstead, Glass
This vase form has two layers of pattern. On the outside surface are ammonites bobbing amongst strands of seaweed and a shoal of tiny fish. The shells have been sandblasted and then engraved to decorate the shells. Trapped within the glass is another layer of pattern where the sandblasted shells were applied mid blowing (see below for process) and have distorted to seem as though they are being viewed through moving water.
The core of cobalt glass hangs within the form and is robed in a dusting of gold glass, evoking the reflected colours seen within water. Although the vase looks like it is delicately balancing on a narrow base the weight of glass holds the piece securely in place.
This piece has an extra layer of pattern within the glass. We can stop blowing the glass while it is still a small bubble, about the size of an apple, take it off the blowing iron and cool it down to room temperature. Julia can then sandblast a design onto the outside surface of the bubble; take it back to the glass blowing studio where it is heated back up to blowing temperature and stuck onto a blowing iron with a donut of fresh molten glass. It is then enveloped in another layer of molten glass from the furnace and blown into the desired shape. The pattern Julia sandblasted into the surface expands as the bubble is blown to full size and moves as the form of the piece is created. It’s a really exciting technique as you never predict exactly how it will evolve.
One-off pieces are where Julia gets to play with the glass, adding more layers of colour during the blowing process and decorating the glass with very intricate designs which she wouldn’t want to repeat.
An original design by Julia Linstead, Glass.
Hand blown lead crystal.
The pattern is hand drawn and sandblasted into the surface of the glass.
